The Big Red Santa started in 2009 when a children’s social services group asked him to fill in for a scheduled Santa who could not make the event. 

This is the way most Santas begin their wonderful journey.

The only outfit available was an old, well-worn suit from K-Mart. 

It was so tattered at the neckline that a white turtleneck had to be worn underneath. 

The polyester beard was certainly unsanitary. So…. baby powder was sprinkled into a very short beard.

On the outside, the suit looked dreadful. 

On the inside, there was a large case of stage fright and abject terror. 

What does one do? 

What does Santa say to a child?

The next day, a wonderful little girl named Emily came to the event organizer and said:

“Thank you for bringing the real Santa Claus.” 

When asked why she thought that, her simple reply was: “He was nice, and he had a real beard.”

The Big Red Santa was finally hooked when Emily brought him a gift the next year.

The years have gone by. The wardrobe and the performance have improved.

The beard is now longer and is certainly a more natural white.

The Big Red Santa has had the pleasure and joy of meeting thousands of children….and adults !

But it’s not just about the suit, or the belt, or the boots. 

It’s about the twinkle in the eye.

 At the heart of it all is the opportunity to listen to a child’s wish, to be kind, to be supportive, to encourage gift-giving, and to remind a young one to say “I love you” to those who gently care for them and help them grow.

Emily went off to college two years ago and is certain to graduate with plans of impacting the world a little.

She just doesn’t know that she already has…..
